3 Top Reasons to Rekey Your Business

If you are a business owner, an excellent key system can effectively protect your facility. However, some circumstances could force you to rekey your locks. For instance, an employee can misplace a key, or an unknown person can break into your business premises and steal vital information or your assets.

Check out other situations where you may need a locksmith to rekey your office or your business' locks.

If You Move to a New Location

After you move into a new office space, your to-do list should include rekeying your new locks. Realtors, former tenants, or workers may still possess keys to your new location, which means they can still access your place without your knowledge. Such a case significantly compromises your business' security.

You should bring in an experienced locksmith to check on the condition of the existing locks. If the locks match your desired standards, the locksmith can rekey them. However, if the existing lock's quality is poor, your locksmith can remove them and install superior locks to avoid security issues down the road.

If Fired Employees Fail to Return Office Keys

A former employee shouldn't have a key to your office. Fired employees or those who resign should return their keys, especially if they leave under unfavourable circumstances.

Even if they return the keys, you should rekey your locks because a former disgruntled employee might use a duplicate key to break in and harm your business. For your peace of mind, consider rekeying your locks after an employee leaves or quits. But if your business has too many employees that need access, you can switch to an access card system instead.

If a Lock Malfunctions or You Lose Keys

Over time, keys can warp, rust or erode, especially for older locks. So, if keys begin to fail and you suspect old locks are to blame, invest in new door locks.

Also, your lock's springs and pins can slowly deteriorate with time. You may not be able to unlock your office doors when that happens. In such a case, you should rekey your locks to prevent lockout incidents.

Additionally, if an employee loses a key and it's completely untraceable, you should rekey your locks as soon as possible. Anyone who finds the lost keys can access your business without permission. When you rekey your locks, the old keys become useless, so unauthorized persons can no longer access your business.

If you experience any of these situations, ask a reputable locksmith to rekey your locks as a necessary safety measure.
